Dressing plays a very important role in achieving success in the workplace. The way you present yourself is the way that others will perceive you.
“I dress for the image. Not for myself, not for the public, not for fashion, not for men.”
– Marlene Dietrich
An office environment is such that people start gossiping about you even before they start talking to you, and the first thing that they talk is about, ‘Look at the way he or she dresses up!’
Are you being judged on the way you dress up? Do you want to change your look completely to achieve success, and create a positive image of yourself? If the answer to these questions is a ‘yes’, then here are some tips to dress up successfully at work!
How to Dress in the Workplace
We live and work in an environment where first impressions are more or less the last impressions and sadly those first impressions are based on our appearance. So what should you do to change your existing image, or create a powerful first impression if it’s your new job? Have a look at the tips that will help you select the right attire for your workplace.
Check Your Organization’s Dressing Policy
Each and every organization has a dressing policy! Yours will too. If you have a uniform to wear, then there is nothing much to worry about, except that you wear the uniform in a neat and tidy manner!
Usually, there are three types of dress codes in an organization. These are business formals, business casuals or ‘no dress code’.
While the first two policies are quite easy to figure, the problem arises when you are working in an organization where there is no particular dress code. There is always a confusion as to what would look appropriate and what would not. So before you go ahead to the mall to shop, know what you need to buy!
Check Your Body’s Dressing Requirements
Once you have checked the dress code in the workplace, you need to understand your body type and the kind of attire that would suit your body.
Now you might see another employee wearing a formal skirt and high heels which looks really stylish and professional at the same time. But that does not mean that you go and get the same attire from the mall for yourself! Analyze your body type and choose to dress smartly. If you are not comfortable wearing high heels, don’t wear them!
If you have a protruding tummy, don’t wear fitted blouse or shirts. Select clothes that hide your body’s flaws, like a bulging waist or tummy, and thighs. Wear something that you are comfortable in and which comfortably hides your body’s flaws.
You Need to Look Professional
There are many employees who end up wearing clothes that seem like they are going for a party rather than coming to work. May be your organization doesn’t have a uniform, or a ‘no dress policy’, but that doesn’t give you the freedom to wear low necks and short skirts or guys to wear Capri pants.
Remember the fact that you are coming to work at the end of the day makes it your responsibility to look professional! In order to work professionally you should also feel professional, and clothing definitely influences on how you feel, right?
Watch Out on Your Accessories and Fragrances
The accessories that you team up with your attire should be appropriate for a professional environment. So don’t over accessorize with fancy earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. The more subtle, the better.
As far as wearing fragrances and perfumes are concerned, don’t wear scents that are too strong! You don’t want to upset the nose of everyone around you, right? You may find the fragrance nice, but others may not! So don’t try to gain unnecessary attention.
Be Neat and Tidy
“We act the way we dress. Neglected and untidy clothes reflect a neglected and untidy mind.”
– Author Unknown
Remember, how we dress is how we feel! So no matter what you wear and what you select, as long as it is not shabby, well-fitted, well-ironed, neat and gives you a tidy and clean look, you are sure to achieve success in your dressing at workplace!
The main mantra is that you should be comfortable in what you are wearing and carry it of with confidence! Dressing well in the workplace is a must as it helps you to look confident, which is the basic requirement when it comes to doing your work and be professional.
